Depression is surprisingly common and comes in many different forms and levels of severity. Whilst sometimes described as the “black dog”, it can be characterised by a persistent sadness and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities that we previously found enjoyable.
Many people are unwilling to acknowledge depression and, consequently, it is often left untreated until the symptoms become more acute and start to have a significant impact on others. It is often labelled as something else: grumpiness, being short-tempered, irritable, shut-down, negative, disconnected, miserable or sad.
Most people have periods of feeling down in their lives, but depression is a sense of low-mood or sadness that remains persistent for weeks or months, rather than just a few days.
It can be described as being chronic or acute, it may be long-term or situational. Many people with depression have other associated symptoms, such as anxiety. As well as low mood, depression can also lead to disturbed sleep and appetite, fatigue, poor concentration and motivation. Depression can affect our ability to lead a fulfilling and rewarding life.
Often, people think that depression is a weakness, trivial, that we can “pull ourselves together”, but depression is real and, if left untreated, can have tragic consequences. In extreme cases, a person may take their own life because they want to be rid of the debilitating, overwhelming and often paralysing feelings of helplessness and hopelessness associated with depression.
The good news is that with the right treatment and support, most people with depression can make a full recovery.
