Panic Disorder involves the experience of a sudden, unexpected and intense increase in anxiety and fear.
In its most severe form it will manifest as panic. The trigger for a panic attack may be identifiable but it can also occur where there is no obvious cause.
During panic episodes people can experience a number of symptoms including shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, palpitations, an urge to go to the toilet, numbness, tingling sensations and feelings of detachment like you’re not connected to your body. These physical symptoms are the body’s subconscious response to a perceived imminent threat. Although they are highly unpleasant, they do not present any immediate danger. However, they can generate a huge amount of unwelcome stress and fears that you might stop breathing, have a heart attack and even die.
Following one or more panic attacks, fear of future episodes may develop. This in turn can start a process of behavioural change where you may avoid situations for fear they might trigger another attack. This may result in a loss of confidence where fear starts to influence your decision-making process, which begins a negative downward spiral in your daily routine.
