...

For most of my life, I believed that if I wanted things to improve, I needed to:

And whilst there is certainly a place for action, determination and perseverance, I have discovered something surprising through my own journey and through working with hundreds of clients.

Many of us are exhausted.

Not because life is hard.

But because we are fighting life.

We are fighting:

And, perhaps most painfully of all, we are fighting ourselves.

The Illusion of Control

The human mind (or ‘ego’) is a remarkable thing.

Its primary purpose is survival.

It is constantly scanning for danger, predicting outcomes, solving problems and trying to keep us safe.

The problem is that the mind (‘ego’) often assumes that everything depends upon it.

It believes that if it can just think enough, worry enough, analyse enough or control enough, then eventually everything will be okay.

But how is that working out?

How many hours do we spend worrying about things that never happened?

How much energy have we invested trying to control situations, people or outcomes that were never really within our control?

How often have we postponed peace until some future point, when life finally looks the way we think it should?

The irony is that the harder we try to control life, the more anxious and disconnected we often become!

The Spiritual Paradox

Every major spiritual tradition points towards a similar truth.

Buddhism speaks of non-attachment.

A Course in Miracles (ACIM) teaches acceptance and forgiveness.

Ram Dass encouraged us to “be here now.”

David Hawkins spoke about letting go.

Different words.  Different paths.  The same invitation.  Stop resisting reality.

This doesn’t mean becoming passive.

It doesn’t mean giving up on your dreams.

It doesn’t mean accepting abuse or mistreatment.

It means ending the internal argument with what is.

Because suffering often begins when reality and our expectations collide.

Life says:  “This is what is happening.”

The ego says:  “This should not be happening.”

And the struggle begins.

Surrender Is Not Giving Up

Many people misunderstand surrender.

The ego hears surrender and immediately thinks:

But true surrender is none of these things.

Surrender is not giving up.

It is giving up the struggle.

It is putting down a burden you were never meant to carry.

It is recognising that there is an intelligence moving through life that is far greater than the thinking mind.

After all, your heart beats without your effort.

Your body heals cuts without your management.

The sun rises every morning without your involvement.

Life is already happening.

The question is not whether life is flowing.

The question is whether we are willing to flow with it.

What Happens When We Stop Fighting?

Something remarkable begins to happen.

The nervous system settles.

The body relaxes.

The heart opens.

The mind quietens.

Instead of living in fear, we begin living from trust.

Instead of trying to force outcomes, we become available to possibilities.

Instead of constantly trying to fix ourselves, we begin recognising that perhaps we were never broken.

And from this place, life often begins to flow more naturally.

Not because everything becomes perfect.

But because we stop demanding that it should be.

A Simple Question

Today, I invite you to ask yourself one question:

“What am I fighting right now?”

Perhaps it is a feeling.  Perhaps it is a situation.  Perhaps it is yourself.

And then ask:  “What would happen if I stopped fighting it?”

Not forever.  Just for a moment.

What would happen if you simply allowed this moment to be exactly as it is?

You may discover something beautiful.

You may discover that peace was never in the future.

It was underneath the struggle all along.

Because perhaps freedom is not found through more effort.

Perhaps freedom begins the moment we stop fighting what already is.
